An air mattress is a portable bed that can be blown up with air when used then deflated and packed or stored when unused. This handy sleeping tool is perfect for camping due to its easy transportability and lightweight property. The outer covering of an air mattress is usually made of an airtight and waterproof synthetic material such as plastic or rubber. Due to these properties, an air mattress can sometimes be used as a recreational floating device but is not recommended as a water transport vessel.

The discovery of an air mattress came about in 1980 to provide a solution for people who are experiencing sleep discomfort due to their old beds. An air mattress was found to be a better substitute because of its capability to mold and flex with the contours of the user’s body. This way the air mattress allowed the person sleeping on it to have a more comfortable position while he or she sleeps at night. Aside from that, the air mattress also is also a good space-saving bedroom furnishing since it can be simply folded and kept when deflated.

When an air mattress is purchased it is usually packaged with a mechanical air pump. The air pump is used to blow air into the mattress. Similar with regular mattresses, an air mattress comes in different sizes and colors that buyers can choose from.
